Exploring Leadership

(HNRS2020)

One of the main reasons I signed up for this course is that is covered on of my required general electives I needed to graduate, but it also intrigued me, because I have never thought of myself as a leader but always wanted to be one.  One of the major things that I learned from this class was the multitude of leadership styles out there.  It led me to discover and realize all of the different leaders and  personal leadership opportunities that I've experienced throughout my life.

The class introduced me to many different leadership theories that can be applied differently based on the situation they are needed for.  We also took several different self-assessments that showed us how we react to different leadership styles and what styles suite us best.  This class did not only focus on analyzing leadership, but also followership and how one cannot exist without the other.  With the small size of the classroom, we were a tight-knit group that was able to delve deeper into how we each personally felt about the different styles.

In the end, I've gained a lot from this class--much more than I thought I would.  Being a senior, I was able to reflect back on my past co-ops and see changes I can make to then later apply to my life after college.  While I was not required to take this course, I am very glad I did, feel like everyone should take a similar type of class in college, or seminar in life, that can teach them how much a type of leadership style can make or break the success of what it is being applied to.
